Phnom Penh, March 27, 2026 — Senior government officials and academic leaders from across the region convened to discuss strategies to strengthen Cambodia’s research and innovation sector, emphasizing the importance of translating research outcomes into tangible benefits for society as part of the country’s journey toward Vision 2050.

The discussion, led by H.E. Prof. Dr. Chhem Kieth Rethy, Senior Minister and Chairman of the Economic, Social, and Cultural Council, also serving as Chairman of the Advisory Council to the National Council of Science, Technology & Innovation, highlighted the urgent need to strengthen collaboration among government institutions, academia, and the private sector.
“Innovation is not just about technology—it is about people and business,” H.E. Prof. Dr. Chhem Kieth Rethy said, noting that while the government sets policies and regulations, the private sector plays a critical role in driving investment and leadership for sustainable progress.

Participants agreed that higher education institutions must evolve into hubs for human capital development and industry-relevant research, aligning national research priorities with commercial opportunities to enhance competitiveness.
The discussion also underscored the importance of strengthening linkages between researchers and local farmers, as well as tailoring health initiatives to Cambodia’s specific context—both essential for ensuring food security and advancing healthcare innovation. Increased ASEAN cooperation was highlighted as key to bringing research outputs to international markets.
H.E. Prof. Dr. Chhem Kieth Rethy concluded that sustainable, long-term transformation depends on continued investment in local skills and strong institutions to secure Cambodia’s future success.
