H.E. HEM Vanndy, Minister of Industry, Science, Technology & Innovation, on March 11, 2025 received a delegation from Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) and the Japan Environmental Management Association for Industry (JEMAI), to discuss leveraging Japan’s decades of experience and expertise in industrial management to support Cambodia’s sustainable industrial development.

During a meeting, Mr. HAMASAKA Takashi, Director of the Environmental Management Promotion Office at METI, emphasized Japan's rapid industrialization in the 1950s and 1960s, which raised significant pollution concerns. In response, the Japanese government forged an active partnership with the private sector to develop pollution control technologies and implement regulatory measures, while promoting sustainable industrial development.

He cited the establishment of dedicated pollution management units in factories since 1971 and emphasized the importance of integrating Cambodian enterprises into global supply chains by meeting international sustainability standards.

Minister Vanndy welcomed Japan’s insights, noting Cambodia’s own economic growth and urbanization trends that present both opportunities and environmental challenges. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to attracting investment while strengthening environmental, social and governace (ESG) safeguards.

Stressing a balanced approach, he called for practical regulations tailored to Cambodia’s context and emphasized education and support for businesses rather than punitive measures.

Mr. HAMASAKA assured that JEMAI would support Cambodia’s pollution management efforts, fostering an industrial sector that aligns with sustainable development goals.
